First Muslim American Police Chief

Ibrahim Baycora was sworn in as police chief on 4 February 2020, making him the first American and Muslim police chief in the history of Paterson, New Jersey.

In a ceremony at City Hall, Baycora, 60, was sworn in as the city’s first Muslim police chief by Andre Sayegh, the city’s first Arab-American mayor, making history and starting a new chapter.

Baycora who moved to the United States as an infant with his family from Turkey was sworn in using the Quran and followed by the recital of doa.
